GMAT headache

JA Volunteer work

I went to Beijing Industrial University's TongZhou branch to conduct a training called MESE last Saturday. This is the first time I have ever been to university to give them training related to economics and company operation.

Thanks for our friends' compromise, otherwise I would have missed this opportunity. I am not sure if anyone read my blog knows these two ladies, Tina Tian from Lenovo HR and Xiaojia Ruan from GE infrastructure. They helped me to adjust the schedule with university so that I can attend this event.

MESE is a program that built on a model to simulate the market behavior. I believe the core mystery of MESE is the program decides market size and market share for every competing teams (companies) in the game, and then based on the principle of cost, profit, tax, interest etc to compute the operational result of every team. It's a fun game, and this game helps people to understand more about the relationships among those operational factors in running business.

The teaching experience is a great pleasure to me. At the very beginning, when I was preparing the training materials, I did worry about the acceptance of this course. As everybody at my age can imagine, the students are born mostly the later half of 80s, even close to 90s. I was worrying about the age gap. Some said 3 years can be a generation gap in mindsets, however, I don't feel this during this course, I believe part of the reason is the course itself is designed in a way that attracts people and the competition is another factor that brings everybody's attention. I am very glad that one of the teams gets quite high score after 8 rounds of play, and their teams members are really into it. As a matter of fact, MESE covers a lot of knowledge about operation, and finance report readings. Even though I went through the balance sheet, income statement and cash flow report, I believe they can remember just little about those terms. It's too hard to teach them everything in just 1 hour. I gave them some materials as offline readings; I hope they will have time to read it.

The students are cute and smart; our volunteer colleagues are very professional and kind; this is truly a very pleasant experience.  I hope I can have more time next year to participate JA activities.
